Hawaii is the only state in the US that produces coffee, and is home to the world-renowned Kona coffee. Kona coffee is famous for its full body, distinctive aromas, beautiful brightness and legendary balance. Kona coffee truly is one of the most luxurious coffees available in the world.
Kona coffee is grown in the North and South Kona districts on the island of Hawaii, also known as "The Big Island". The coffee grows on the volcanic soiled slopes of Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa, where sunny mornings, humid and rainy afternoons, and mild evenings produces some of the most favorable and unique coffee growing conditions in the world. Coffee trees do very well in Kona, and the distinctiveness of the coffee presents itself in every cup.
Kona Coffee Grades
Most coffee that is produced by serious farmers is graded based on the size of the bean. The following grades do not reflect the quality of the beverage that the beans will make, but are used to describe the size and the shape of the bean. Here are the various grades of Kona coffee, with the top being the largest:
- Extra Fancy
- Fancy
- Number 1
- Peaberry
- Prime
Kona Peaberry is an abnormal bean that is only found in 5% of all coffee beans. When a coffee berry is maturing, the seed inside splits into two separate beans. However, sometimes the seed never splits, and you get an abnormal bean called a peaberry. Some people believe that peaberries have a distinctive flavor. Peaberries are also much more expensive due to their rarity.
